From traditional materials
to the latest in roofing technology

Roofing materials have come a long way. The simple asphalt shingle has been improved to last up to 50 years, while new materials offer the beauty of slate and wood, but without the inherent weaknesses.

5 Star Roofing stays on top of the latest roofing advancements. And while many roofing companies offer products from only one or two suppliers, we offer solutions from the four largest roofing material manufacturers. This allows us to offer a great variety of materials, styles, colors and warranty options. Below are the basic categories of roofing materials we offer.

Asphalt Composition Shingles

Asphalt shingles are currently the most popular type of residential roof material for a variety of reasons. They are relatively inexpensive, simple to install, fairly durable, come in a variety of colors and styles, and can be easily repaired and maintained.

The lifespan of asphalt shingles depends highly upon the environment. The hotter the environment is, the shorter the service life of the shingles. Considering the average temperatures in the Kansas City area, a 20-year shingle, for example, should last close to 20 years under normal conditions. Manufacturers warrant their best asphalt shingles for up to 50 years or longer.

Dimensional Asphalt Shingle Other factors that affect the service life of an alphalt shingle include the slope of the roof and proper attic ventilation.

5 Star Roofing offers top quality asphalt shingles from GAF/ELK, Tamko, CertainTeed and Owens Corning. Styles range from standard 3-tab shingles (image A) to the newer dimensional shingles (image B) in a wide variety of colors.

Manufactured Slate and Shakes

Manufactured slate and shake tiles look like slate stone and natural wood shakes, but are made from a durable polymer composite. While natural slate can be brittle and easily damaged by hail or foot traffic, these synthetic options are incredibly durable and easy to install.
Manufactured slate
Not all homes can handle the heavy weight of natural slate, but manufactured slate is much lighter. The cost is also much less than natural slate.

Wood shakes can suffer from mold and mildew, but that isn't a problem for it's synthetic counterpart. In addition, these products are freeze/thaw, fire and wind resistant.
Synthetic wood shake
Both manufactured slate and shakes have a great life expectancy, with a minimum duration of 40 to 50 years. Most tile manufacturers will offer a minimum of a 50 year limited warranty on their products.

5 Star Roofing offers manufactured slate (image C) and shake (image D) tiles from Tamko and CertainTeed in a variety of styles and colors.
